How Coloursome Footwear Is Made — From Raw Material to Your Doorstep

There is a question we get asked often, sometimes with genuine curiosity and sometimes with a trace of suspicion.

How is this possible at this price?

It is a fair question. When you hold a pair of Coloursome sandals — feel the weight of the genuine leather, press your thumb into the cork footbed, run your fingers across the soft suede lining — the price does not immediately make sense. This does not feel like something that should cost what it costs.

So we want to answer that question honestly and completely. Not with marketing language, but with the actual story of how these sandals are made — where every material comes from, why we chose it, and how we have been able to price them the way we have without compromising on a single thing that matters.

The Leather

Let us start with what you see first — the upper. The part of the sandal your eye goes to, the part that makes the first impression, the part that tells you whether what you are holding is the real thing or a convincing imitation.

Every Coloursome sandal uses top-grain leather.

Top-grain is the second layer of the hide, just below the outermost surface. It is the layer that combines durability with workability — thick enough to hold its structure through years of wear, supple enough to mould to your foot, smooth enough to take colour and finish beautifully. It is the leather used in premium handbags, quality belts, and serious footwear the world over.

We did not arrive at top-grain leather by accident. During those early months of development — the months of visiting tanneries, handling samples, and comparing materials side by side — we looked at every option available. Full-grain leather at the top, top-grain below it, corrected-grain and split leather below that, and then the synthetic alternatives that dominate the mass footwear market.

Full-grain leather is the finest — it retains the natural surface of the hide and develops the most beautiful patina over time. We will use it in future Coloursome products. For our current collection, top-grain gives us something that matters deeply at this stage: consistency. Top-grain leather is sanded and treated to remove natural imperfections, which means every pair we produce meets the same visual standard. For a young brand building trust with new customers, that consistency is not a compromise — it is the right call.

What we refused to compromise on is thickness. Thin leather feels thin. It flexes in your hand when it should hold its shape. It scuffs easily and ages badly. Our leather straps and uppers are cut at a thickness that gives you the substance you expect when you pay for a genuine leather product. You can feel the difference the moment you pick up a pair.

Where the Leather Comes From

Our leather does not come from halfway around the world.

India is one of the largest leather producers on the planet. The Tamil Nadu corridor — Ambur, Vellore, Ranipet — is home to tanneries that have been processing hides for generations. These tanneries supply leather to luxury brands in Europe and the Americas. The same raw material that goes into goods sold at several times our price point is produced here, in these towns, by craftspeople who have spent their entire working lives perfecting this skill.

This is not a secret. It is simply a fact that most Indian consumers do not know, because most Indian brands have not been telling it.

We source our leather directly from tanneries in this corridor. No intermediaries. No importers. No markups passed through three hands before the material reaches our manufacturer. The leather we use is processed in India, by Indian tanneries, and it travels a short distance from where it is processed to where it is crafted into footwear.

That proximity is one of the reasons our prices are what they are.

The Suede

For our Prime clog, we use premium suede leather for the upper and lining. Suede comes from the inner split of the hide — the underside of the leather that has been buffed to create a soft, velvety nap. Done well, it is one of the most luxurious materials in footwear. Done poorly, it pills, flattens, and feels cheap within weeks.

The suede we use has been specifically selected for two properties: softness and durability. These two things are in tension with each other in suede — the softer the nap, the more delicate it tends to be. We worked through multiple samples before settling on a suede that gave us the tactile quality we wanted without sacrificing the longevity our customers deserve.

The same suede is used for the footbed lining across all three Coloursome models — Heritage, Prime, and Bloom. This is the surface your foot actually rests on. It is the material your skin is in contact with every time you wear your sandals. We were not willing to use anything other than genuine suede here, regardless of what it did to our material costs. Synthetic footbed linings may look similar in a product photograph, but they feel different against skin and they behave differently over time — they tend to pill, compress unevenly, and lose their texture.

Genuine suede breathes. It warms to your skin temperature. And over time, it conforms to the exact contours of your footbed impression — becoming, in a very real sense, yours.

The Cork Footbed

This is the heart of every Coloursome product. The part that no one sees but everyone feels.

Our footbed is built from natural cork granules bound with natural latex — the same fundamental construction used in the finest European comfort footwear for over a century. Cork-and-latex is not a new technology. It became the standard in anatomical footwear because nothing else behaves the way it does.

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees — a renewable material that can be harvested from the same tree every nine years without cutting it down. When combined with natural latex, it forms a compound that is simultaneously firm enough to support your body weight and yielding enough to gradually take the impression of your foot. The result, over weeks and months of regular wear, is a footbed that has physically adapted to your specific anatomy — your arch height, your heel depth, your toe spread.

This is not a metaphor. This is what actually happens.

Finding the right cork footbed took longer than almost any other sourcing decision we made.

We explored manufacturers in China first — and we will be direct about this: Chinese cork footbed manufacturing is exceptional. The Chinese footbed industry has spent decades perfecting the moulding process, the cork-latex ratios, and the anatomical shaping that makes a great footbed. The quality we saw in Chinese samples was genuinely impressive.

But the cost was high. And more importantly, bringing footbeds from China while manufacturing the rest of the sandal in Tamil Nadu made no sense for a brand built on the conviction that Indian supply chains are an advantage, not a limitation.

So we went looking for an Indian cork footbed manufacturer who could meet our specifications. We found one. And then we worked with them — through multiple sample rounds, detailed briefings on our exact anatomical requirements, and honest conversations about what we would and would not compromise on — until they could produce a footbed that met every standard we had set.

The heel cup. The longitudinal arch supports on both edges. The transverse metatarsal support across the ball of the foot. The toe grip indentations. The raised front edge. Every feature we required is present in every footbed we use.

It took longer than simply ordering from an established Chinese supplier. It was worth it — for the supply chain, for the partnership, for the story, and because the footbed we ended up with is exactly what we wanted.

Our footbed is moulded — not flat, not cut from a sheet of foam, but formed in a mould that builds in the anatomical features that make a genuine difference to how your foot feels at the end of a long day:

A heel cup that holds the fatty tissue of your heel in place rather than letting it splay outward — the single most impactful comfort feature in any piece of footwear.

Longitudinal arch supports on both the inner and outer edges of the footbed — the raised ridges that run alongside the long bones of your foot and prevent the over-pronation and supination that cause fatigue and knee strain over time.

A transverse metatarsal support that runs across the ball of the foot — distributing your weight across all five metatarsal heads rather than concentrating it on the first and fifth.

Toe grip indentations — five small raised mounds under each toe that encourage the toes to spread and grip naturally rather than being pushed forward and compressed.

A raised toe bar at the front edge of the footbed that protects the toes during the natural rolling motion of your gait.

Every one of these features has a function. None of them are aesthetic. And all of them are present in every single Coloursome footbed — made in India, to specifications we defined ourselves.

The EVA Sole

The outer sole — the part that contacts the ground — is EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). Ten millimetres of it, white, clean, and engineered for the specific demands of all-day comfort footwear.

EVA is the material of choice in premium comfort footwear because of what it does under load. It compresses slightly when you step down, absorbing the impact that would otherwise travel up through your ankle, knee, and hip. And it recovers — unlike foam, which compresses and stays compressed, EVA returns to its original thickness after each step.

Our EVA soles are bonded to the footbed shell using industrial shoe adhesive that is heat-cured and pressure-bonded. The joint between the sole and the footbed is the most common failure point in footwear. We pay close attention to this joint in our quality control process — every pair is inspected for any gap, lift, or inconsistency at the bond line before it leaves our manufacturer.

The Hardware

Every buckle on every Coloursome product is solid metal with an antique brass finish.

This sounds like a small detail. It is not. The buckle is one of the first things you touch when you put on your sandals. It is visible every time you look down. And it fails before almost any other component if it is made cheaply.

Cheap buckles are made from hollow metal shells or, worse, metal-coated plastic. They tarnish unevenly. The pin loosens after repeated use. The finish chips at the edges where the strap passes through.

Our buckles are solid. They have weight. The finish is applied evenly and consistently, and the pin mechanism operates with the smooth, firm click of something made to last. We pay more for them than we would for the hollow alternative. We will keep paying more for them.

The Manufacturing

Every Coloursome product is made in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu — the same town that first caught our attention on that early road trip through India's leather corridor.

We work with a manufacturer whose craftspeople have spent years building the specific combination of skills that quality comfort footwear requires. The handcrafting of the woven Bloom upper alone requires a level of manual skill that cannot be automated — each pair is woven by hand, which is why no two Bloom sandals are precisely identical, and why they look the way they do.

The footbed moulding, the leather cutting, the stitching, the sole bonding, the quality inspection — all of it happens here, in Tamil Nadu, close to where the leather is sourced and far from the inflated cost structures of metropolitan manufacturing.

So How Are the Prices This Low?

Here is the honest answer, in plain language.

We eliminated the middlemen. Most footwear brands buy from importers who bought from distributors who bought from manufacturers. Every hand the product passes through adds a margin. We go directly from manufacturer to you.

We source where the material is made. Our leather does not travel from Italy to India and back. It is processed in Tamil Nadu and crafted into footwear nearby. The logistics cost of our supply chain is a fraction of what it would be for an imported product.

We built our cork footbed partnership in India. While Chinese manufacturers have perfected the cork footbed and produce exceptional quality, we chose to work with an Indian cork footbed manufacturer and bring them up to our exact specifications — investing time instead of paying a premium, and keeping our supply chain entirely within India.

We sell directly to you. Coloursome sells on coloursome.com and Amazon India — directly to the person who wears the product. There is no retail store margin, no franchise fee, no distributor markup. The savings go into the product and the price.

We built everything ourselves. This one matters more than it might seem.

Every element of Coloursome's digital presence was designed, built, and set up in-house, without hiring a single external agency or consultant for any of it. Setting up domain, the brand identity and visual design. The complete Coloursome website on Shopify — every page, every product listing, every integration and product photo shoot. The connection to Razorpay and Shiprocket. The Meta Business Suite setup — Facebook Page, Instagram Business account, Commerce Manager, product catalog, all automation flows. The Amazon India seller account — every product listing, every Excel flat file, every variation, the Brand Registry enrollment, the ad campaign setup. The email authentication — SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. The Google Search Console verification and sitemap submission. The WhatsApp Business. The Meta Ads setup.

Every platform. Every integration. Every piece of content — product photo's, product descriptions, brand story, size guides, return policies, automation messages, ad copy. All of it was created in-house.

Most brands at this stage outsource large portions of this work. Digital agencies charge anywhere from ₹50,000 to several lakhs for the kind of setup work that goes into launching a brand across a website, Amazon, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp simultaneously. We did not pay any of that. Those savings are embedded in our pricing.

We are a young brand building a relationship. We are not carrying the overhead of a legacy brand, a global marketing budget, or a network of physical retail stores. Our size at this stage of our journey allows us to operate leanly and price honestly.

We chose India. Indian leather, Indian manufacturing, Indian cork footbed, Indian craft — these are not compromises. They are advantages. The cost of producing at this quality level in Tamil Nadu is fundamentally different from producing at the same quality level in Europe. We have been fortunate enough to find the right partners in the right place, and we are passing that advantage directly to you.

What we did not do is cut corners on materials. The top-grain leather is genuine top-grain leather. The suede is genuine suede. The cork is natural cork. The latex is natural latex. The buckles are solid metal. None of these are synthetic alternatives dressed up to look like the real thing.

The price is low because we earned the right to make it low — through months of supply chain work, through building every digital touchpoint ourselves, through choosing Indian sourcing over imported alternatives, and through selling directly to you without the layers of margin that traditional retail adds between the maker and the wearer.

There is no trick. There is no compromise hiding somewhere in the product. There is just a brand that decided to do things differently from the start — and is pricing its products to reflect what they actually cost to make, not what the market might bear.

And finally — one more thing we want to be transparent about. As part of our brand building journey, we are currently operating on deliberately low margins. Building a brand from the ground up means starting from zero — zero reviews, zero purchase history, zero word of mouth. The only way to change that is to get Coloursome into the hands of real customers, on real feet, living real lives. So we have made a conscious decision to price our products as accessibly as we can at this stage — not because we are discounting, not because the product is worth less, but because we believe the product speaks for itself and we want as many people as possible to discover that. Every customer who experiences Coloursome, shares it with a friend, leaves a review, or posts a photo wearing their Heritage sandals or Bloom slides will help us build something that will last. We are investing in that relationship now, at the cost of margin, because we believe it is the right foundation to build a brand on. The prices will reflect the full value of this product as the brand grows. Right now, they reflect where we are in that journey — and our genuine desire to bring you along with us from the very beginning.

What you pay for is the product. That has always been the point.

A product made from materials sourced in India, crafted by Indian hands, in a town that has been producing world-class leather goods for generations — at a price that reflects what it actually costs to make something this way, without the layers of margin that traditional retail adds between the maker and the wearer.
